Vårsnö on art, passion, and life beyond work

By Noerd, 5 June 2024

Kicking off Noerd Alert, we got to hang out with the super-talented duo Vårsnö, led by colorist Mimmi Muskos and composer/sound designer Petter Karlsten. Based in Stockholm, they’ve worked with clients like Uniqlo, Mindler, Klättermusen, and UNHCR. Together with Noerd, we've teamed up on projects for BookBeat, Tarkett, and Note design studio, and more to come.

Noerd: if you could collaborate with any director, cinematographer or musician (living or deceased), who would it be, and what kind of project would you envision working on together?

MM: Nadia Lee Cohen. The Productions, the looks, the colors. She’s a genius.

PK: A dream of mine would be to release music with Gondwana Records. A collab with any of these artists in their roster would be amazing.

Noerd: Outside of your creative work, what are some shared hobbies or passions that both of you enjoy together?

PK: I think we share most interests with each other. Last year we both found running. Maybe it’s a 30 year crisis, but we love it! Later this year we will both run a 30k trail run, up and down 3 mountain peaks in the northern Sweden. Wish us luck…

Noerd: When you need a break from the creative process, where do you go or what do you do to recharge and find inspiration?

PK: I grew up in a very small town in the countryside, and there is nothing more recharging for me than to leave the city for a while. This in turn makes me even more inspired when I get back.

MM: I think physical distance to work is what makes me able to get new ideas and inspiration. For me it’s important to try to find ways that break my thought patterns, whether it’s going away for a weekend or just turning left instead of right on the way home from work.

Noerd: What is your most recent discovery? Any prop tips for sound designers, colorists or other fellow human beings?

PK: Not such a recent discovery, but I can’t stress enough how much of a game changer it is for me to have a session template set up, specified to my needs and workflow. When working in audio post or music, it can quickly spiral out of control if you’re not on top of your project. It might sound boring, but it really helps me to work fast, and enables my creativity.

MM: I totally agree with Petter. Having a fixed node structure is my biggest timesaver. Doesn’t mean I have to use every node, but to build a structure that fills your needs makes me work more intuitively.

Before I started working in film I dreamed about working in healthcare as an ambulance paramedic.

Noerd: If you were to boast about something related to your job, what would that be?

PK: Last year I received an award from STIM, for being one of the fastest growing composers in Sweden. That was unexpected and very honoring.

MM: Since I started working, I’ve had a list of dream end clients. This past year I’ve crazily enough worked with all of them.

Noerd: Is there a moment, a failure, or a person who has played a crucial role in your career?

MM: Petter has definitely played a huge role in my career. 10 years ago when applying for an internship at a production company, Petter was the one I had my first meeting with, together with our then boss. I had just graduated high school and having just moved to Stockholm, Petter was one of the first people I met, and he’s been by my side since day 1.

PK: I couldn’t have said it any better. It’s a privilege to work and live with Mimmi!

Recent work from Mimmi & Petter for Klättermusen.

Noerd: If you had to choose a different career path, what would it be?

PK: Before I started working in film I dreamed about working in healthcare as an ambulance paramedic.

MM: I would love to do something with object design. Like designing light switches or…bike racks? Either that, or working at Circle K or Granngården in a small town. I love stores with a specific niche but with a super wide range of products.
